Marketing PC Above: Erik Johnson, co-founder of Infinite Monkeys, shares marketing tips for independent developers. Despite independent success stories such as ConcernedApe's Stardew Valley or Studio MDHR's Cuphead, most studios face a crowded market and a host of challenges to make profits on their games. Today, at the Game Developers Conference, the co-founder of the independent Infinite Monkeys Entertainment studio, Erik Johnson, shared some tips for other developers to decide whether or not their games match the market. In the \Know Your Market: Making Independent Games That Sell\ panel, Johnson broke some of the market trends on Steam, the world's largest PC gaming market. He plunged deep into the life of Infinite Monkey Goes On: Done to Death. It was recognized as one of PAX's Top 10 Independent Games of the Year in 2014, and received positive feedback from critics and gamers - yet it sold fewer copies than expected. Johnson did not reveal the exact numbers, but he noted that even an expansion that improved the quality of the game did not lead to better sales. It was embarrassing, so Johnson started watching Steam reviews and Metacritic as well as tools like Steam Spy, which aggregates stats like how many people have a title on Steam and how many people are playing a game at the same time. a little fuzzy - Owners are not the same things as sales. There are many ways a game can enter a user  's library, warns Johnson - but he has managed to pull some big trends out of his research. He discovered that the genre of Life Goes On already puts him at a disadvantage: puzzle platformers earn much less than action RPGs, which he says was the most profitable category. He came to this conclusion by looking at the tags on Steam and estimating the median income for games in certain genres. Action RPGs are followed by first-person shooters and city builders - and Metroidvanias, roguelikes, and puzzle platforms are late.
